Fair Isle Mitten with Robin Henne
Time & Location
About The Event
Fair Isle is a traditional knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors. Although any number of colors may be used, traditionally there are no more than 2 in each row.
This 4-session class will introduce you to knitting Fair Isle style. We will knit a standard mitten in the round using double pointed needles while learning to read a chart and do stranded knitting. The pattern to be used is the Laurelhurst Fair Isle hat, a free pattern on Ravelry.com. We will translate a hat pattern to fit a mitten- another great skill! It uses a background color and one contrasting color, which could be a multicolored or variegated yarn if you like. Students will also learn two different methods for creating a thumb gusset and two different decreasing methods.
Knitters must know how to knit and purl. It would help to have a least a little experience knitting in the round on double point needles.
Materials: 2 skeins worsted weight wool, in contrasting colors. Wool or wool-blend yarn works best. Novelty yarns will not work well for this pattern.
A set of 4-5 size 6 double-point needles. (short needles such as sock needles are often preferred)
