Beautiful Where Broken: An Introduction to Visible Mending
Time & Location
About The Event
This workshop is an introduction to the basics of visible mending. Visible Mending is a centuries-old practice of extending the life of garments and other textiles garments by reinforcing worn or ripped areas with layers of fabric and dense stitching. Once seen as a sign of poverty (patching your clothes meant you couldn’t afford new ones) Visible Mending is now a sought after skill and valued practice in the DIY, Slow Fashion, and Eco/Green movements. In this workshop we will practice the basics of Sashiko stitching, and learn how it can be used to make beautiful and intentionally visible repairs in garments that are worn or frayed. What is broken becomes beautiful, when we slow down and embrace the process of mindful repair. No longer something to hide, our mends can become exquisite reminders of the beauty of aging, the passing of time, and the power of slowing down and paying attention. We’ll spend the morning creating a small mending sampler. After a lunch break, students will work on mending a favorite garment.
PLEASE BRING: bag lunch and $10 for materials, which will include needle and thread, and some patching materials. Bring one item of clothing you’d like to mend, and a few pieces of extra material, making sure it is the same weight, if not the same kind of fabric, as the piece you are mending.
